How does Pottery Painting work?

On arrival, you choose what pottery pieces you are going to paint.

We have a big range of ‘blank’ pottery items in stock from party animals, figurines to mugs and plates to vases, teapots and lots in between!

We talk you through the painting process and start you on your pottery painting journey.  We are on hand to offer advice and tips along the way!

Younger children are encouraged to release their creativity and make bright and colourful masterpieces. They can also do handprints or even finger painting.

When you are finished, we will glaze and fire your items in our kilns.  We will tell you at the end when your pieces will be ready to collect.

By the time you collect them they are not only beautifully vibrant decorative items but fully useable and food safe too.

How much does it cost?

Each pottery item is individually priced, and that price includes the pottery piece, the painting, the glazing and our regular firing.

Prices start at £15 for a mug or small plate, and go up to £100 for our largest piece.  There’s something for every budget.

How long does it take to paint my pottery?

We allow a 2 hour session for you to choose and paint your pottery.  Some people take a little longer and some a little less time.

What age is it suitable for?

The wonderful thing about paint your own pottery is that it’s suitable for all ages.  From days old babies to Granny and Grandad, it is an activity that every one can sit and enjoy.

Microwave / Dishwasher Safe?

Is it dishwasher safe?

You will notice that on the bottom of your Denby-bought mugs there is a little sign that tells you if it’s dishwasher safe. There is not this sign on the bottom of your hand painted pieces!

The dishwashing process uses extreme temperatures, and things get knocked together in the washing process, this could cause the glaze to crack which in turn will let water into the ceramic body, weakening the whole piece. Over the life of the piece regular dishwashing will cause the glaze to go dull and the dishwasher tables will have an abrasive effect.

Do I put mine in the dishwasher? No!  I have a husband that loves washing up.  I don’t own a dishwasher!

Is it microwave safe?

Nope. I don’t recommend anyone puts their hand painted pottery items in the microwave.

The clay body of the pottery is porous, and it can absorb moisture. For example, if you are heating soup in a mug, the microwave may heat the soup to a suitable temperature, but the mug itself could burn your mouth where it’s overheated. I’m sure you’ve got certain bits of crockery that get hotter than others… and now you know why!

I'm not arty, I couldn't possibly do it.

The most common comment heard in the studio is ‘but I am not creative, I could never make anything look good!’

There is not ‘right’ way to make art.  The only wrong way is not trying!

We will take you through the painting process and there are lots of ideas on walls.

How long will you keep my pottery for?

We will keep your pottery for up to 3 months.  After 3 months, we’ll text you if we get desperate for you to come and collect your pieces!

What if I can't return to collect my pottery?
